What was your worst experience in middle school or high school? Did it have a lasting effect on you? Do you think you learned anything positive from it?
Being physically and mentally abused by my classmates day in and day out for four and a half years. No teacher or administrator willing to believe what I was saying was true. No one to watch out for me or help me. The counselor wanting to have me committed to an asylum.
My tenth grade English teacher - who was also a friend - said later that she never saw a student who was so scared and defeated at the same time. She's the reason teachers started helping me.
The abuse, in turn, led me to an abusive psycho karate instructor who set me up to be disabled in one arm. It didn't work completely, thank heavens, but the pain is blinding some days.
Positive - this period of time is when I started writing seriously.
