Chemistry lab story

Before anyone panics reading my comment on the last post about a lab explosions - it did NOT happen in my lab. Allow me to describe my department. Its a four story brick building if you count the basement. The classrooms are all on the first (ground) floor, offices in the basement and scattered through the rest of the building. Labs on the second and third floor.
My lab is in one of the second story beginner labs, nothing that could cause any major damage - the strong acids locked up all that good stuff - as we're just starting to learn how to do everything.

We were working on a three part graphing lab today (oh my aching back from standing and bending over that damn counter) when there was an explosion from somewhere in the building, the power went out briefly, the alarms all came on - and everyone just kept working like nothing out of the ordinary had happened. Dr. Edwards - my prof from last term - stopped in to check and make sure everyone was okay and not panicked.

I have no idea what actually happened. But I do know there's a gas lab where they play around with some pretty volitle stuff. My kid brother was in chemistry club (making fireworks) and told me they blow up this lab at least once a term. If not more. I have a hunch that's what happened. And he had warned me. If there's an explosion in the building, don't worry unless the teachers start looking scared. Very, very strange. *Grin*

*rotflol* Thank the gods that doesn't happen in Geology labs. You really have to mess up for there to be an explosion. However, at my school, there was a particle accelerator in the basement.....

Have you had anyone juggle the rocks? That used to be the entertainment in my labs. :) The teacher wasn't around.

Hoo boy, that could be dangerous. I really hope nothing bad ever happened with that thing. And in the basement too.

Well, it's pretty much gotta be underground.

And no, we tended to come up with stuff like "Aye corundum" (Simpson's was big, what can I say?) And jokes about how certain mineral names sounded (imagine the fun early 20's people can have with minerals like Wollasonite and cummingtonite at 4am!)

Ask your dad about the mesmerizing effect of rotating a thin section of olivine in a projecting petrographic microscope. Put me to sleep on the bleeping tables more than once!

He said that it never gave him any trouble. But he's been retired for thirteen years so his memory might be a little fuzzy. :)

Oh, I can imagine. Lack of sleep, class and a dirty mind can get really interesting at times.

The original kaleidoscope! Really pretty. The colors just wink in and out, and all of 'em are represented too, pretty much.

like how calleigh blew up her lab? *grin*

if something like that happens here -

the whole school will be out
authorities'll be dispatched in
noises & rants will be made

&

life goes back to normal..

locals are pretty 'unexposed' to 'calamities'

I thought poor Calleigh was gonna have a heart attack.

Don't you just love how the "authorities" work? I'd rather know what's going on than be kept in the dark.
